Why Product Order Matters
Applying your skincare products in the correct order ensures maximum absorption and effectiveness. The wrong sequence can prevent products from penetrating properly, wasting your time and money. Follow this guide to get the most out of every product in your routine.
The Golden Rule: Thinnest to Thickest
The basic principle is simple: apply products from thinnest to thickest consistency. Water-based, lightweight products go first, followed by heavier creams and oils. This allows each layer to absorb properly without being blocked by thicker formulas.
Complete Layering Order
Step 1: Cleanser
Always start with clean skin. Use a gentle cleanser appropriate for your skin type.
Morning: Single cleanse with CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser or similar
Evening: Double cleanse - start with Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil, then follow with water-based cleanser
Wait time: Pat skin dry, no wait needed before next step
Step 2: Toner
Toners prep your skin and help subsequent products absorb better. Apply to damp skin for extra hydration.
Examples: Anua Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner, Good Molecules Niacinamide Brightening Toner
Application: Pat gently with hands or use cotton pad
Wait time: 30 seconds
Step 3: Exfoliating Acids (PM only, 2-3x per week)
Chemical exfoliants like AHA/BHA should be applied after toner on clean skin.
Examples: The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution, The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution
Wait time: 5-10 minutes for acids to work at optimal pH
Step 4: Essences
Lightweight, watery treatments that boost hydration and prepare skin for serums.
Examples: COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence
Wait time: 30-60 seconds
Step 5: Serums & Ampoules
This is where you apply targeted treatments. If using multiple serums, layer from thinnest to thickest.
Hydrating serums first: The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Asiatica Ampoule
Treatment serums next: The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, Anua Niacinamide 10% + TXA 4% Serum, COSRX The Niacinamide 15 Serum, Medicube TXA Niacinamide 15 Serum
Vitamin C (AM only): The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 30%
Retinol (PM only): Apply after other serums
Wait time: 30-60 seconds between each serum
Step 6: Eye Cream
Gently pat around the orbital bone, avoiding direct contact with eyes.
Examples: AXIS-Y Vegan Collagen Eye Serum, Medicube PDRN Lip Sleeping Mask (for lips)
Wait time: 30 seconds
Step 7: Moisturizer
Lock in all the previous layers with a moisturizer suited to your skin type and time of day.
Lightweight (AM or oily skin): CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel
Rich (PM or dry skin): CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream, COSRX Advanced Snail 92 All In One Cream
Wait time: 1-2 minutes before sunscreen (AM) or sleeping mask (PM)
Step 8: Face Oil (Optional)
If you use facial oils, apply after moisturizer to seal everything in. Oils create a barrier that prevents water-based products from penetrating.
Wait time: 1 minute
Step 9: Sunscreen (AM ONLY - FINAL STEP)
Always the last step in your morning routine. Never skip this!
Examples: Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun SPF50+ PA++++, CeraVe Hydrating Sunscreen SPF50, Klean Beauty Glass Melt-In Sunscreen, HerBeauty 3 in 1 Bright Sunscreen
Wait time: 10-15 minutes before makeup application
Step 10: Sleeping Mask (PM ONLY - Optional)
For extra overnight hydration and repair.
Examples: Medicube Collagen Night Wrapping Mask
Special Layering Rules
Multiple Serums: What Order?
When using multiple serums, follow this hierarchy:
1. Hydrating serums first: Hyaluronic acid, Centella
2. Water-based treatments: Niacinamide, Vitamin C
3. Oil-based or thicker serums: Retinol, heavier formulas
Mixing Actives: What Goes Together?
✅ Safe to layer:
- Niacinamide + Hyaluronic Acid
- Niacinamide + Vitamin C (despite old myths)
- Niacinamide + Retinol
- Hyaluronic Acid + anything
- Centella + anything
⚠️ Use separately (AM vs PM):
- Vitamin C (AM) + Retinol (PM)
- AHA/BHA (PM) + Retinol (PM on different nights)
❌ Don't mix:
- Multiple strong acids at once (too irritating)
- Retinol + AHA/BHA on same night (for beginners)
Common Layering Mistakes
1. Applying Sunscreen Too Early
Sunscreen must be the absolute last step. Applying anything on top dilutes its protection.
2. Not Waiting Between Steps
Rushing through your routine prevents proper absorption. Give each product 30-60 seconds to sink in.
3. Using Too Much Product
More isn't better! A pea-sized amount is enough for most serums. Overloading prevents absorption.
4. Applying Oil Before Water-Based Products
Oils create a barrier. Always apply water-based products first, oils last (except sunscreen).
5. Mixing Incompatible Actives
Some ingredients cancel each other out or cause irritation when combined. Follow the guidelines above.
6. Skipping Moisturizer Because You Used Serum
Serums treat, moisturizers seal. You need both! Serums alone will evaporate without a moisturizer on top.

pH-Based Order (for actives):
Lowest pH first (acids) → Higher pH (other treatments) → Neutral pH (moisturizer)
Pro Tips for Perfect Layering
- Damp skin absorbs better: Apply hydrating products to slightly damp skin
- Pat, don't rub: Gentle patting helps absorption without irritation
- Less is more: 2-3 drops of serum is usually enough
- Consistency is key: Perfect layering done daily beats random application
- Listen to your skin: If products pill or don't absorb, you may be using too much or incompatible formulas
- Simplify if needed: You don't need 10 steps - focus on essentials done correctly
